Chapter 21

Abby

Another three weeks have passed. My hair is back to looking perfect, and I am starting to become obsessed with Xander Hamilton.

The realization is almost like a shock to the system. I want him all the time. I worry when he’s not here, which, he sometimes does spend time back in his own apartment that’s now returned to normal. But I worry that he won’t come back, and when he does, I can breathe again.

I stick my fingers in my hair and stare at the floor, wondering what’s going on with me. I’ve been in Minnesota for a month now. I have five months left before I go back home.

Fear threatens to choke me at the thought. What does that mean for me and my relationship with Xander? Do we even have a relationship? Is it just me obsessing over things?

My cell phone ringing interrupts the destructive thoughts consuming me. I don’t really want to answer, but I recognize my mother’s ringtone, and I know that she’ll just call again and again until I answered.

I take a deep breath in and answer.

“Mom, hi…”

“Abigail, you need to come home,” she gets right to the point. “This nonsense has gone on long enough.”

Her voice in my ear is grating on my nerves. She’s been getting more aggressive in her requests that I would quit my job and go back home. Actually, requests is not a good word for what is happening. They are downright demands.

“I can’t just pack up and leave, mom,” I tell her for the hundredth time. “I have responsibilities here. And I am not even halfway through with my internship…”

“Internship,” she scoffs at the word, and I can see her in my mind as she rolls her eyes in disgust. “Like you need an internship. Your father will find something for you to do without all that, if getting a paycheck is that important to you.”

“It’s not just that, mom. It’s not about the paycheck,” I try to explain. “It’s about…”

“I’d say,” she cuts me off, “considering you’re not even getting paid for being there. I’m sure they’re breaking some sort of labor law with that.”

And now it is my turn to roll my eyes.

“That’s not how any of this works, mom. And I signed a contract. I can’t just leave.”

“Ugh,” she huffs in my ear. “I can’t believe you would just go and sign legal binding documents without having your father’s attorney’s look them over. That was incredibly stupid, Abigail. You can’t be this naïve.”

“Mom!”

This is not the first time she’s called me stupid, nor will it be the last, I am sure of it. But it still hurts every time I hear it.

“I had a talk with Wesley about this as well,” she continues, completely unbothered. “I told him that this type of behavior from you will need to stop once you two are married. He agreed.”

Anger rises inside of me, but I don’t have it in me to start an argument with my mother.

“Mom, this is really important to me.
